Over 40 million Americans move homes every year. Are you planning a move and are considering Charleston, South Carolina as your next place to call home?
Charleston is a gorgeous, temperate, and historic destination. It has a mid-range housing market, including fixer-uppers for those with lower budgets. Aren’t convinced yet? Don’t worry.
We love our area and know you will too. Here are six reasons moving to Charleston will be the best thing you’ve ever done!
And if you can’t find your dream house as-is, we’ll be right there to help you with home remodeling or building a house.
1. There’s History Everywhere
Did you know that Charleston is the oldest city in the state of South Carolina? It’s also the second-largest when you consider the metro area. The town got its start over 300 years ago in 1680 when colonists from England settled there.
They named it Charles-town, to honor the British king at the time, King Charles the Second. With its calm harbor and easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, Charlestown thrived as a center for trade — and still does!
The British weren’t the only people to occupy Charleston. Once the Civil War started, this historic city was the site of a major Union victory. Taking Charleston was one of the precursors to Sherman’s historic march to the sea. There’s history around every corner in our colorful city.
You can learn all about our city’s storied history at the Charleston Museum, or by taking a walking tour. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon when you’re here looking at houses or interviewing home builders.
2. We Have Great Weather
If you’re looking for somewhere to live in the Southeast, you know that you’re signing up for hot summers. Fortunately for us, we have the beautiful South Carolina coastal breeze to give us some relief.
We can’t promise you won’t get hot in the summer, but our temperate winters easily balance out the heat. It’s rare for temperatures to drop low enough to need anything but a light winter jacket.
In fact, you might as well look for a home with a guest bedroom or space for an addition, because everyone will want to come to visit you!
3. World-Class Beaches
Want to live near the beach but aren’t a fan of the classic, touristy beach town feel? Well, then Charleston is the place for you! Our gorgeous city is more complex and historic than say, Myrtle beach, but it offers six of South Carolina’s top beaches!
Folly Beach is the best spot for experienced or want-to-be surfers. It’s got great waves and even the second-biggest fishing pier on the east coast! If you want to feel like a tourist for a day or are craving that beach town feels, you’ll love Folly.
Looking for something a little more wild-nature than wild waves? You’ll love Kiawah Island. It’s part resort, part sports paradise, and home to some of the most gorgeous organic scenery you’ve ever seen.
Sullivan’s Island is Kiawah Island’s less fancy counterpart. Instead of a country-club-esque setting, this beach community feels more like something you’d find in coastal Maine. It’s quaint, unassuming, and full of some of the best seafood you’ve ever had!
Those are our three favorites, but you’ll also want to check out Isle of Palms and Seabrook Island!
4. It’s a Student’s Dream
Those who go to school in Charleston rarely leave after graduation. They fall in love with our town’s vibe and make it their new hometown. And even if you aren’t a student, the number of higher learning institutions have benefits for everyone.
First, the proximity to college campuses makes Charleston a great place for real estate investors. You can flip a house, build a house, or do home remodeling in Charleston, SC and have no trouble finding renters.

The quality of restaurants in Charleston is something visitors never expect, but also leave talking about. Between our fresh seafood, the deep local history, and the range of cultures from the colleges, we have every kind of food you could ever want.
Some foodies even plan their honeymoons in Charleston– that’s how well-known our food scene is! When you’re here visiting before moving to Charleston, don’t miss The Lobster Mac n’ Cheese at Halls Chophouse. It’ll quickly become a favorite.
Not in the mood for something savory? People have been falling in love with (and over) the coconut cake at The Peninsula Grill. This hotel restaurant starts food service at 4 pm, which makes it the perfect spot for pre-dinner drinks.
6. It’s Just a Great Place to Live
Between the food, the art, the nature, the schools, and the proximity to other great locations, we can’t say enough good things about Charleston. Personally, we’ve never met anyone who regretted moving to Charleston.
